The Major Case Squad helped investigators swiftly solve Wilson’s seemingly random highway shooting.
A 37-year-old motorist told police that a white SUV had pulled over near the highway shortly after 4:30 a.m, according to Fox2Now. The search for the suspects led authorities to a Days Inn in Caseyville, Illinois, on October 16. Within days, investigators arrested a Texas man accused of the shooting and uncovered evidence that could connect him to another highway shooting reported earlier that month. Investigators are conducting laboratory and ballistic examinations to establish whether the weapon used in that incident was the same rifle allegedly used in Wilson’s killing, The Guardian and Fox2Now reported.
Investigators approached Taiya Herndon outside the hotel room before Willie Herndon emerged and attempted to flee, according to The Guardian. A drive that should have ended with Halloween festivities instead became the beginning of a homicide investigation spanning multiple states. Seventeen-year-old Alyssa Wilson was on her way to a Halloween event in Missouri when a bullet struck her car on a highway, killing her and cutting short a future filled with plans. When the driver went around the vehicle, a bullet struck the rear of the motorist’s car. Nobody was injured. A shell casing was recovered at the scene. He was subsequently arrested. A search of the room reportedly uncovered a rifle in plain view, ammunition matching the type associated with Wilson’s shooting, two licence plates and handwritten notes detailing police vehicles and other vehicles Herndon allegedly believed were following him. Investigators also found a petrol station receipt linked to an area near the scene of Wilson’s death.
A wider investigation into highway shootings
The investigation took a wider turn when authorities revisited a separate shooting reported on October 11 along Interstate 55 near Bates Avenue in St Louis. Fox2Now reported that investigators have drawn comparisons with the 2024 interstate shooting death of Collin Brown, another case involving a victim with no known connection to the suspected shooter. For Wilson’s family, however, the investigation cannot undo the loss of a teenager who had been looking forward to turning 18 and taking her first family vacation to Disney.
Authorities are examining whether the two incidents could be connected to other unsolved cases involving apparently random attacks on motorists. What began as an ordinary journey to a Halloween celebration has become a case with implications far beyond one stretch of Missouri highway.
