This entire town in California is on sale again.
The town has its own local post office, a border patrol facility, a church, a VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) post, 27 apartments and a hardware store. The town was listed in 2019 and again in 2024, when it was priced at $6.5 million before being taken off the market. Now it’s again on the market with a price of $5,995,000.
Campo, an entire town in California, just an hour away from San Diego, has been on sale for years. Now the price has hit its lowest as it did not get any luck. This isn’t the first time Campo has hit the market.
The current owner, John Ray, has owned the town for 22 years. The location became prominent in 1885 when the Gaskill brothers constructed the fortress-like Campo Stone Store on-site using four-foot-thick walls to protect against border raids, according to California Post.
Ray said he hasn’t had the time to develop the property, and so far, it hasn’t sold, according to 10News. The listing agent, Nick Hernandez, said the sale covers a specific portion of the area. “It’s bringing in about forty thousand a month in current rents,” Nick said. The parcels for sale are not considered historical land, according to Nick. “The opportunity extends to revitalizing currently vacant buildings within the town, a move that could add substantial income by introducing new or enhanced services like gyms, laundromats, daycares, or community centers, directly responding to the desires and needs of the local population,” reads the real estate listing.
But they sit within a town steeped in history as Campo was once home to a military base in World War II. During World War II, the area changed massively when the US Army absorbed the land to construct Camp Lockett, building a sprawling network of military barracks to garrison the legendary Buffalo Soldiers of the 10th and 28th Cavalry Regiments, the last horse-mounted units in US military history. Following the war, these exact military structures were preserved rather than demolished, transitioning into private ownership in the late 1950s where they were converted into residential apartments and long-term commercial spaces that still stand at the address today, the report said.
