Reading out Shah’s message to the 78th Regular Recruit (RR) IPS batch, Mohan said tackling drug trafficking required coordinated action against networks, technology-based investigations and greater public awareness. Mohan said India’s conventional internal security challenges had changed significantly, even as new threats emerged. Insurgency in the Northeast has reduced to minuscule proportions,” he said, adding that much of the remaining unrest in parts of the Northeast stemmed from ethnic conflicts rather than insurgency. He said the challenges included crime, radicalisation and distortions in markets. “While Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam has been a lifelong and millennia-old adage of this country, the primary charge on this country’s resources is that of the citizens of this country,” he added. Academy director Sujeet Pandey said, “Our objective has been to prepare future police leaders who are intelligence-led, technology-enabled, evidence-based, and citizen-centric.

Shah’s message also called for effective implementation of the three new criminal laws, greater use of forensic science and sensitivity in investigations. It reiterated govt’s zero-tolerance approach to terrorism under the Prahar strategy, emphasising time-bound action, better intelligence coordination and a whole-of-govt approach to national security. “Left-wing extremism has conclusively come to an end. However, he cautioned that terrorism remained a concern. “Cybercrime has little entry barriers. He also flagged illegal immigration, stressing the need to identify illegal foreign nationals and take action against them in accordance with the law. Download the TOI App.
