In the absence of tap water, no-network areas that are part of municipal limits still rely on the supply of water tankers
To accelerate the project, the private contractor has been directed to scale up manpower from 300 to 500 labourers. A fee of Rs6,000 will be charged for each new connection,” he said. They have already hiked the price of a single tanker trip to between Rs800 and Rs1,000, and prices are bound to skyrocket in the coming days.
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar : The civic body has announced a slew of measures to facilitate tap-water supply to tanker-dependent Satara-Deolai and other areas lacking pipeline networks. “Thereafter, water will be released into the lines for flushing and cleaning, after which new tap connections will be issued. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation (CSMC) commissioner Amol Yedge said the civic body is ensuring timely completion of ESRs under the new water supply scheme to mitigate the impact of drought. CSMC and Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP) are working on joint planning for this initiative,” Yedge said. We hope tap-water supply becomes a reality at least by the start of next summer,” said Vaishali Beedkar, a resident of Satara-Deolai area.
“The distribution network currently laid down under the ESRs has several gaps. A survey of these gaps will be conducted, followed by necessary repairs. Wherever these gaps exist, new distribution lines will be laid. The civic body chief noted that the gap-filling work is slated for completion within two months after Diwali. “Private tanker operators are going to exploit residents from no-network areas during this drought crisis. The proposed measures include a comprehensive survey and repair of gaps in the distribution lines of 14 upcoming elevated storage reservoirs (ESRs), laying of new distribution lines, and a significant increase in manpower for gap-joining work. On Oct 4, scores of residents from no-network pockets of Satara-Deolai, where tap water remains unavailable, staged a protest by climbing an under-construction ESR. With local borewells completely dried up due to deficient rainfall, these densely populated areas are already grappling with severe water scarcity.
“They will be deployed exclusively for joining gaps in the distribution lines,” Yedge added. Once these measures are executed, regular water supply will commence in Satara-Deolai area and other no-network localities in the new year, according to Yedge.
