The key flyovers in Mumbai, including the Sion and Vidyavihar flyovers, will be inaugurated on October 22
The BMC said the flyover would reduce travel time between the two sides of Vidyavihar station from about 30 minutes to 10 minutes. The first, which included relocating railway services and installing two girders measuring 99.34 metres in length and 24.5 metres in width over the tracks, was completed on May 31, 2024. The second phase, covering service roads on both sides, widening of the Somaiya nullah and relocation of Central Railway facilities, was completed by September 30, 2026. The last, Goregaon flyover which is 1.26-km-long, three-lane-in-each-direction flyover at the Ratnagiri Hotel junction in Goregaon East is a key component of the BMC’s Goregaon-Mulund Link Road project.
BMC said that the new projects are expected to improve east-west connectivity, ease congestion at key junctions and improve traffic movement in the eastern and western suburbs. The BMC said the flyover would help address major traffic bottlenecks in Goregaon East and support the wider GMLR project, which is intended to provide a more direct link between the eastern and western suburbs. It is also expected to ease traffic pressure on the existing flyover near Ghatkopar railway station. Construction involved two phases. The project also includes connections to the railway station’s foot overbridges and the reconstruction of ticket booking offices, the station master’s office and staircases. Goregaon Bridge The flyover runs from General Arun Kumar Vaidya Marg to Santosh Nagar on Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari Marg.

MUMBAI: Finally the key flyovers namely, Sion, Vidyavihar and the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) will be inaugurated virtually by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday, October 22, at 1pm, in the presence of deputy chief ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar. The original opening date for these flyovers was October 15. Vidyavihar flyover is expected to cut travel time between the eastern and western sides of the railway station from around 30 minutes to 10 minutes. The reconstructed railway overbridge near Sion station replaces a 112-year-old bridge declared unsafe. The railway span uses two semi-through steel girders, each weighing 496 tonnes and measuring 54.5 metres in length and 26 metres in width. Pedestrian infrastructure was also upgraded, including a new subway beneath Lal Bahadur Shastri Road, opened on February 20, 2026, and a relocated and reconstructed pedestrian subway beneath Sant Rohidas Marg, opened on July 14, 2026. The project was originally scheduled for opening on October 15, but the same was delayed. Meanwhile in case of the Vidyavihar flyover the 650-metre-long stretch connects Ramchandra Chemburkar Marg on the eastern side with Lal Bahadur Shastri Road on the western side, crossing the railway tracks near Vidyavihar station. VIdyavihar Bridge The project comprises a 100-metre bridge over the railway tracks, along with approach roads measuring 220 metres on the eastern side and 330 metres on the western side. The two-lane carriageways are between 15.5 metres and 17.5 metres wide.

Foundations were selected according to the geological conditions, with both pile foundations and open foundations used at different locations. Mumbai mayor Ritu Tawde will preside over the ceremony, which will be streamed live at the three project sites. The rebuilding was also necessary to facilitate Central Railway’s plan to lay fifth and sixth railway lines between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Kurla under Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-II). Sion Bridge The old bridge’s piers between the railway tracks obstructed the construction of the additional lines. The new through-span design will free up space for the railway expansion, which is expected to improve the movement of suburban and long-distance trains. The railway portion of the bridge was rebuilt by Central Railway, while the BMC’s bridges department renovated and strengthened the approach roads within its jurisdiction in coordination with the railways. Approach roads connect the bridge to Lal Bahadur Shastri Road towards Kurla, Sant Rohidas Marg towards Dharavi and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road on the eastern side. However BMC officials have claimed that the project has been opened four months ahead of schedule despite challenges involving utility and water pipeline relocation, affected trees and the shifting and reconstruction of public toilets. It is expected to ease congestion around the Vaidya Marg, Dindoshi court, Ratnagiri Hotel junction and Walbhat River junction. The GMLR project aims to connect the Eastern Express Highway with the Western Express Highway, improving east-west connectivity through twin tunnels between Goregaon and Mulund. The flyover’s construction incorporates precast box-shaped concrete segments, curved steel spans and multiple interconnected structures designed to negotiate the complex geometry of the junction. Several state ministers, MPs, MLAs, BMC commissioner Ashwini Bhide and civic committee members are expected to attend the inauguration. Download the TOI App.
