Madurai : Traders at the Thiruparankundram vegetable market lament a complete absence of basic civic infrastructure, pointing out that the market suffers from a lack of proper drinking water and functional toilet facilities.
Established around 25 years ago to serve residents across Thiruparankundram, Harvypatti, Thirunagar and Pasumalai, the market, housing 125 shops, has descended into a state of severe civic neglect.
“When it rains, the area turns into a muddy, unhygienic sludge where people walking through risk exposure to germ-infested filth,” said Murugan , a shopper living nearby. “We pay a rent of Rs20 every day to the corporation but despite this, they do not pay attention to our complaints,” Pandi said, adding that despite inspections by ministers and corporation officials in the last three months, no work has taken place to address their complaints. A senior corporation official said the demands of traders and association members have been taken into account and will be addressed in the coming weeks. Talks are in place regarding the needs of the traders and shoppers and how best to address them,” the official said.
Local vendors, particularly women who form a significant part of the trading community, report that the marketplace is a far cry from its once pristine and reputable past. The monsoon also causes other issues for shoppers. Inadequate waste management and scattered garbage mix with rainwater to create a muddy, unhygienic pathway. “The existing daily collection will be intensified in order to keep the area clean during the monsoon.
