In the event of a dog bite or even a scratch, Dr Santhi stressed the wound must not be ignored and should be washed thoroughly with soap and running water immediately before seeking medical care at the nearest health centre. These school awareness sessions are being organised in coordination with teachers, healthcare personnel, and ASHA workers to prioritise child safety.

Dr SV Santhi, the deputy director, department of veterinary services, Dharwad, told TOI the department has urged local authorities to generate public awareness at the grassroots level by distributing pamphlets, holding public meetings, and conducting door-to-door visits. As part of the initiative, the department is launching an awareness campaign across schools to educate children about the dangers of animal bites. Students will be advised against petting unfamiliar dogs, teasing them, or approaching them carelessly while feeding. Local bodies have also been tasked with collecting data and reporting on stray dog counts, anti-rabies vaccination coverage, and dog-bite incidents within their respective jurisdictions.
