Sandakphu, at 11,929 feet, is the highest point in Bengal
Darjeeling: Tourists heading to Sandakphu, at 11,929 feet, will now have to produce a medical fitness certificate or undergo health screening at Maneybhanjang before proceeding to the high-altitude destination. Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) has introduced the measures following the deaths of two tourists in the region in less than a month.
The step has been taken keeping tourists’ safety in mind,” said Dawa Sherpa, field director of GTA’s tourism department. The directive, issued by GTA’s tourism department, applies to tourists travelling to Sandakphu–Phalut by Land Rover as well as those trekking through the Singalila region. “Tourists must produce a medical fitness certificate before entering the region. Those who fail to provide the certificate will have to undergo health screening at Maneybhanjang. If they fail the screening, they will not be allowed to proceed. The SOP also seeks to strengthen emergency preparedness along the tourist route. Tour operators and guides have been directed to monitor the health of visitors under their supervision and arrange immediate assistance during medical emergencies.
