Kolkata: Bangladeshi tourists are slowly returning to the New Market-Free School Street hotel belt, a neighbourhood that had turned listless after over 150 hotels and guest houses were shut around the end of Aug on orders from KMC and the fire department.
In normal times, hotels in this belt record 75%-80% occupancy, with business climbing further in winter.
However, the hotel association said an assurance by the KMC commissioner — that hotels would be allowed to resume business before puja on the basis of undertakings submitted by owners — did not materialise. The shutdown had dealt a sharp blow not only to hoteliers but also to the dense retail ecosystem around New Market. A few restaurants on Sudder Street that were also asked to shut had been allowed to reopen before Durga Puja .
