Navi Mumbai: A 56-year-old woman pedestrian was killed after being knocked down by a garbage truck of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) at the road intersection near Turbhe railway station on the Thane-Belapur road on Monday around 4.45 pm. The accused truck driver has been identified as Ram Lodh (23), a resident of Govandi, who is a contract worker as a driver on a BMC garbage truck. The fatal incident has once again brought to the fore the issue of the dangerous intersection at Turbhe Store near the railway station and of the NMMC’s flyover project work estimated at ₹32 crore having been delayed for the past seven years. NMMC had approved a 560-metre-long, four-lane flyover at Turbhe Store in 2019. The work on the long-stalled Turbhe flyover near Turbhe railway station on the busy Thane-Belapur Road was resumed in April 2026, with officials confirming progress on key pending components, after IIT Mumbai approved a new design, but in reality, no progress has been made beyond excavation.
Sunil Shinde, senior inspector of Turbhe, said, “The deceased woman was identified as Chhaya Gaikwad, residing at Baba gulli (lane) at Turbhe store. The accident was so severe that the woman’s internal organs were exposed. Hence, her body was covered with a black cloth as it was a gory sight. The mob gathered at the accident spot severely thrashed the truck driver. The cops from Turbhe police station rushed to the spot, rescued the truck driver and escorted him to the police station. Till the time of going to press, the Turbhe police were in the process of registering an FIR against the accused truck driver. The fatal accident occurred while he was heading towards Shilphata, Thane district, where the BMC garbage trucks are being parked. An FIR will be registered against the accused truck driver Lodh by invoking relevant BNS sections and Motor Vehicle Act for rash and negligent driving causing death. The contract was awarded to Mahavir Roads and Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd.
