Bengaluru : Lending a friend his house keys for a day turned into an expensive mistake for a 42-year-old man, who returned to find his cupboard broken open and 226 grams of gold jewellery missing. On Oct 21, his wife left for Tamil Nadu on a trip. Thilak reached the house around 7.30pm on Oct 22. The visitor arrived around 10.15pm wearing a face mask. Instead, the visitor made a phone call and, about 10 minutes later, another person arrived at the house.

A private firm employee and resident of Nagarabhavi, he had been living with his family in a rented house for seven years, according to the complaint filed by Rohith (name changed). After removing it, the person was identified by Thilak as a transgender, according to his account. His friend, who had invited a stranger he met on a dating app to the house, was allegedly threatened at knifepoint by two people who ransacked the bedroom and fled with the valuables. The following afternoon, Rohith went to his house in Hesaraghatta, leaving the keys with his friend Thilak (name changed), who had asked to stay there for a day. Thilak had struck up a conversation with a match on Grindr, a dating app used by the LGBTQA+ community, and invited someone he believed was a woman to the house. The two chatted for some time. Soon, the visitor walked into a room and began checking the cupboard. When Thilak questioned the person, the visitor allegedly threatened him, warning him to keep quiet. The visitor also threatened to call others. Thilak, worried that a commotion in the neighbourhood would land him in trouble, asked the visitor to leave.

Around 11.45pm, Thilak called Rohith, who rushed back to the house around 12.30am. A check revealed that a mangalya chain, a necklace, bangles, three gold chains, a bracelet, a maati, five rings and three pairs of earrings were missing, weighing approximately 226 grams in total. Police have registered a case under BNS Section 309 for robbery and are making efforts to trace the accused.
