New Delhi: The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has given Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) seven days to submit a report on alleged reservation discrepancies in PhD admissions after the university failed to respond to its initial notice.
The commission’s reminder, dated Oct 27, follows a complaint by Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and comes amid protests by student organisations over the alleged shortfall in Scheduled Tribes (ST) seats. The issue was first raised by Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students’ Association (BAPSA), which alleged that JNU notified only 38 ST seats against 53 required under the 7.5% reservation benchmark for its 711 PhD seats in 2026-27 — a shortfall of 15 seats. The university did not respond to the allegations. JNUSU’s delegation and Krantikari Yuva Sangathan have submitted memoranda to the vice-chancellor over the issue. Student organisations have demanded a review of the reservation roster, transparent programme-wise seat allocation and immediate rectification of the alleged shortfall.
