Bengaluru: Karnataka rejected 83,806 applications for voter enrolment during the SIR period until Oct 26, the eve of publication of the final electoral rolls.
The state’s electorate fell by nearly one in five during the SIR, with 65.6% of those excluded classified as shifted and 19.1% marked absent. The rejections came despite enrolment drives by the election machinery to add voters to the rolls.
Meanwhile, only nine of 361 appeals against voter deletions had been heard at the district level by Oct 21, data from the chief electoral officer’s office showed. Of the 361 appeals, Bengaluru Urban accounted for the highest number at 92, followed by BBMP North (81), BBMP South (43) and BBMP Central (26). Outside Bengaluru, Belagavi recorded 19 appeals, Mysuru 14, Bengaluru Rural 12 and Dakshina Kannada nine. By Oct 21, district authorities had responded to appeals from Chitradurga (1) and Uttara Kannada (1).

Chief electoral officer Anbu Kumar said no voter had formally complained to him about being wrongly excluded from the final rolls. No responses had been recorded in the remaining districts by that date, according to the CEO’s office. Asked why the appeals had not been processed within the SIR timeline, Kumar said he was not aware when they had been filed and noted that the process had a three-week window.
However, the appeal data showed that several voters had approached district authorities seeking redress. Responses were also recorded for four of seven appeals in Vijayapura, one of three in Vijayanagara and two of three in Koppal. He added that voters whose appeals were admitted could be included in subsequent electoral rolls, though these would be part of the regular roll-updating process rather than SIR exercise.
