One of its tusks appeared to be broken, but the injury might have occurred in an earlier incident, he added.

Plantation workers arriving for their shift in the morning were the first to spot the animal. Forest officials rushed to the spot after receiving alerts from the workers. The elephant tried to climb out of the pit on its own but failed. It was eventually rescued after an excavator was used to widen the opening of the pit. As soon as it emerged, the tusker made its way into the nearby forest. The forest officials had taken precaution to ensure that the tusker would not stray into human habitations.

Varantharappilly forest range officer K S Shinoj said a herd of elephants had entered the area on Wednesday night and the tusker might have become separated from the herd before falling into the pit.
