The estimated loss is pegged at Rs4.81 crore, while the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) fire department received the distress call at 7.36am, and the first fire tender reached the spot within four minutes, officials said. However, the intensity of the blaze forced the department to mobilise around 10 firefighting vehicles, including five water bowsers with a capacity of 16,000 litres each and five tankers carrying 10,000 litres each. Goods equivalent to more than 15 truckloads, along with office furniture and equipment, were destroyed. Nearly 4 lakh litres of water were used during the operation. The premises, originally belonging to a steel industry, had been divided into 10 godowns and rented out to transport operators. Borkar demanded a detailed probe and submission of a report within 10 days.

The highest individual loss, estimated at Rs2 crore, was reported at a godown storing clothes, carpets, electrical equipment, curtains, bedding materials, air conditioners and computers. The blaze broke out at a godown storing plastic packaging material around 7am and soon engulfed six adjoining godowns, according to officials. Encroachments, highly combustible materials and inadequate fire safety arrangements made the eight-hour firefighting operation particularly challenging, sources said. Officials said large quantities of plastic packaging materials, clothes, electrical equipment and other transport consignments fuelled the fire, causing it to spread rapidly. The unauthorised extensions restricted access to parts of the premises, making it difficult for firefighters to reach the affected structures and contain the blaze, according to officials and local representatives.

Three other godowns suffered partial damage. Firefighting teams from Lakadganj, Kalamna, Sakkardara, Civil Lines, Sugat Nagar and other stations were pressed into service. The fire also gutted three pick-up trucks and an autorickshaw. Cooling operations continued thereafter to prevent the fire from reigniting. The incident has once again raised concerns over encroachments and inadequate fire safety arrangements in one of the city’s older commercial and industrial localities. However, several sheds had reportedly been extended into adjoining open spaces, including portions of a nearby drain. The incident has also raised questions about regular inspections of such commercial establishments and compliance with prescribed fire safety norms. MLA Krishna Khopde and NMC ruling party leader Narendra Borkar visited the site. Download the TOI App.
