In June 2026, the NWSL side unveiled ambitious renderings of an expanded CPKC Stadium and a major riverfront development. The renderings, presented during a Kansas City City Council committee meeting on June 30, showed how CPKC Stadium could evolve from its existing 11,500-seat capacity into an 18,000-seat venue. That would add 6,500 seats, giving the club more room to welcome supporters and potentially host larger sporting events.
“The Kansas City Current presents one of the greatest success stories in our city’s recent history, and CPKC Stadium has already proven that world-class investment in women’s sports pays off,” Mayor Quinton Lucas said in a news release earlier this month. Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Mahomes have another reason to be excited about Kansas City’s sporting future. The couple, who are part of the Kansas City Current’s ownership group, are backing a club with ambitions that stretch far beyond the football pitch. The proposal could transform the area into a major destination for sports, entertainment and tourism, while giving women’s football an even bigger stage in Kansas City. The Kansas City Current’s expansion plans represent a major step in the club’s long-term vision. The proposal also includes a parking garage, mixed-use buildings, improved infrastructure and pedestrian access connecting different parts of the riverfront. Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas welcomed the club’s growing influence, highlighting the importance of investment in women’s sports.
Patrick joined Brittany in the Current’s ownership group in 2023, becoming the first active NFL player to hold equity in an NWSL team. It could also strengthen the city’s chances of hosting international competitions, including the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup or the 2031 Men’s Rugby World Cup.
The club has also made its broader philosophy clear, saying it has “always been bigger than a stadium.” For Mahomes, the investment also carries personal significance. Brittany had already been involved with the club and has a background in professional football. The club believes the development could attract major events, create jobs and bring more visitors to Kansas City.
