For hundreds of families in Fort Pierce, Florida, Christmas in 2019 became a little easier thanks to an unexpected act of generosity from Khalil Mack. The NFL linebacker used his foundation to clear $80,000 in outstanding Walmart layaway bills, giving local shoppers a chance to take home their holiday purchases without worrying about the remaining payments. The gesture reached far beyond a typical charitable donation. It brought relief to families during an expensive time of year and showed why Mack has remained connected to the community where his own journey began.
Mack’s foundation stepped in and donated $80,000 to clear those outstanding bills at a Walmart store in Fort Pierce. The money covered approximately 300 to 350 customer accounts, according to CBS News. The store later acknowledged the contribution in a Facebook post on December 6, thanking Mack’s foundation for helping customers ahead of Christmas. In January 2020, reports raised questions about how the store had processed the contribution.
Store manager Mathias Libardi said the foundation approached Walmart with the idea of becoming a secret Santa for shoppers. Walmart acknowledged that the transaction had not followed its internal guidelines and said it took corrective action after reviewing the matter. However, the Walmart donation was not without controversy.
Still, the contribution helped hundreds of shoppers, with Mack’s original intention centred on easing the holiday burden for families in his hometown. His football career brought him fame, but his efforts in Fort Pierce showed another side of the Chargers linebacker: a player who has not forgotten where he came from.
