Joe Burrow delivered one of the most remarkable performances of his NFL career on Sunday, leading the Cincinnati Bengals to a 43-36 overtime win over the Tennessee Titans despite throwing three interceptions. Burrow finished with 462 passing yards, five touchdown passes and a rushing score, becoming only the second quarterback since 1951 to record a rare combination of passing and rushing numbers. The victory pushed Cincinnati to 5-2, but the turnovers exposed a problem that could prove costly against stronger opponents.

Burrow’s brilliance rescued the Bengals. His mistakes nearly handed Tennessee the game.

Joe Burrow’s performance placed him alongside Hall of Fame quarterback Norm Van Brocklin in a statistical category that has stood untouched for 75 years. Burrow became the first quarterback since 1951 to record at least 450 passing yards, five passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown in a game, according to ESPN Insights. Van Brocklin achieved the feat while playing for the Los Angeles Rams in 1951, when he threw for a then-record 554 yards against the New York Yanks. Tennessee opened a 13-0 lead and continued to challenge Cincinnati throughout a game that featured repeated changes in momentum. Burrow found Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins for key scores, then connected with Higgins for an 18-yard touchdown with 1:17 remaining to tie the game at 36. He led Cincinnati on a 70-yard drive before running nine yards into the end zone for the winning score. The Bengals improved to 5-2, their best start at this stage of a season since 2021. Higgins caught 10 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns, while Chase added 11 receptions for 141 yards and a score. Burrow completed 38 of 48 passes, but the interceptions exposed the danger of relying on his ability to repair mistakes. Cincinnati has now rallied from a 13-point first-half deficit in consecutive games, showing resilience but also leaving itself with little margin for error.

Cincinnati also lost a fumble, giving the team four turnovers overall. Burrow joined that exclusive company with a performance that combined outstanding production with an unusual number of costly errors. The Bengals needed nearly every bit of his output. In overtime, Burrow took control again. His supporting cast also delivered. Their production helped Cincinnati survive a game in which its quarterback repeatedly gave Tennessee opportunities to take control. The record-setting numbers came with a clear warning. Titans safety Amani Hooker intercepted Burrow three times, turning a potentially dominant quarterback display into a much tighter contest than Cincinnati would have wanted. Against a more efficient opponent, that kind of performance could easily end in defeat. We had four turnovers. It’s hard to win that way. That assessment matters more than the historic milestone. The Bengals face the Atlanta Falcons in Madrid next week, and Burrow will need to keep producing while protecting the football. Sunday proved that Burrow can carry Cincinnati through a difficult afternoon. It also showed why the Bengals cannot expect six-touchdown performances to cover every mistake.
