Kolkata: A 26-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by three men, including her boyfriend, at Minakhan in North 24 Parganas on Sunday evening. Police have arrested two of the accused, while another is absconding.
The incident comes barely a week after a Class 11 student was raped and murdered and the sole accused was gunned down in a police encounter in Gaighata. “A gang-rape case under Section 70 BNS has been registered. The incident comes close on the heels of the recovery of a teenage girl’s mutilated body from a neighbour’s house at Gaighata on Oct 25.
Police sources said the woman is a resident of the Jibantala police station area. Police said two of Dewan’s friends, identified as Habibullah Sardar and Mizanur Molla, both residents of Minakhan, were allegedly waiting for them there. “After having food together, the three men allegedly forcibly took the woman to an isolated place and gang-raped her,” the survivor said in her complaint. The duo is being interrogated and a raid is on to nab the other accused,” a senior officer of Basirhat District police said.
“One of the accused, identified as Mustakin Dewan, allegedly developed a relationship with her only a few months ago. A search is on for Molla. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged crime and the relationship between the woman and the accused. The family alleged that she had been raped and murdered. Police arrested Prahlad Das, a distant relative of the family, in connection with the case.
On Sunday evening, he took her out on the pretext of going to a restaurant in Chaital, under Minakhan PS,” an investigating officer said. Acting on the complaint, police arrested Dewan and Sardar from Jibantala late on Sunday. The two arrested men were on Monday produced before the Basirhat subdivisional court, which remanded them in police custody for six days.
