Nagpur: The city police commissioner reprimanded the Ambazari police inspector and fined a beat

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Nagpur: The city police commissioner reprimanded the Ambazari police inspector and fined a beat marshal Rs 500 for not keeping a record of action-taken on a noise complaint, on high court orders. The disclosure came in two affidavits sworn by the city police on Tuesday in public interest litigations on noise pollution, which also cover firecracker sales and modified silencers.

The complaint, dated Oct 11, related to severe noise from a construction site and was reportedly submitted through the Noise Free Nagpur portal. Filed by Sandip Pakhale, DCP (special branch), on the commissioner’s behalf, the affidavit responds to an Oct 30 order. The court sought details on firecrackers burst on roads, crackers above 55 decibels, silencer violations and dealer licences. Licences carry condition No.15 for compliance with Supreme Court directions, the affidavit stated. Police acted against 10 violators under Section 223 of BNS for breaching licence conditions and held around 363 awareness programmes. Complaints can be made round-the-clock to the control room on 9823300100, and awareness messages were circulated on social media groups. The cases were filed under Sections 5 and 15 of Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. Traffic police crushed 372 modified silencers, seized between January 1 and Sep 5, under a road roller on Sep 5.

Mirkhelkar said, “Destruction was carried out to render unauthorised modified silencers unusable and prevent reuse or refitting in vehicles. ” The court directed the Ambazari inspector to file a separate affidavit on it. On vehicles, DCP (traffic) Aaditya Mirkhelkar stated in a separate affidavit that six offences were registered at Sadar police station in Sep and Oct for incidents in Civil Lines.
