He said jewellers had been preparing for the rush and orders. Had Diwali fallen on the 28th or 29th, closer to the month-end, people might have had less money in hand,” Rokade told TOI . Slight easing in gold and silver prices has also improved buyer sentiment, Rokade said. Despite price fluctuations, gold remains a favoured investment as well as a traditional festive purchase,” said another jeweller Prashant Sonar.
He added that customer footfall had started rising from Sunday. “The market is booming this Diwali. With salaries and bonuses coming in, customers are ready to spend. The Dhanteras muhurta begins at 8am, and traders expect customers to make purchases throughout the day. “Gold and silver coins, along with earrings, necklaces, mangalsutras and bangles, are among the popular buys. Many families are also using the occasion to purchase jewellery ahead of the wedding season after Diwali. The rush extends well beyond jewellery. Gadgets, electronics, household appliances, steel and brass articles, clothes, sweets and decorative items are adding to the market’s festive turnover. Gift shops are also seeing demand from companies and individuals preparing Diwali hampers. Dry fruit and chocolate boxes, faral assortments, crockery, bottles, tiffins and customised gift packets are among the options on offer. Scented candles, perfumes and decorative pieces are being packaged for corporate gifting, while customers are choosing gifts based on recipients’ tastes and professions. Markets in Mahal and Itwari have been especially crowded, with hawkers and temporary stalls adding to the footfall and congestion. With Dhanteras kicking off the peak buying period, traders are hoping the rush will sustain through the coming week and carry the festive cheer into Panchami. Download the TOI App.
