Structural factors contribute significantly to the bridges’ rapid deterioration, according to a report by the chief engineer of the bridges division. During the rainy season, water pressure forces loose soil from beneath the approach road outwards, causing frequent potholes and requiring constant maintenance, the report said. The work aims to ease persistent traffic congestion caused by deep potholes along the busy corridor. It involves scraping off damaged surface layers and laying new bituminous macadam bituminous concrete tarring. The centre span over the railway line is flat, while the connecting spans are inclined. Heavy vehicles frequently brake while descending the slope, subjecting the surface to severe mechanical stress and vibration. The continuous strain breaks down the asphalt, damaging the bridge deck and central bituminous layer. Download the TOI App.
