Cong raises 5-point demand for justice to UP’s extremely backward classes

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Varanasi: All India Congress Committee’s extremely backward classes (EBC) observer Rakesh Chandravanshi on Thursday said that even 33 years after the implementation of the Mandal Commission, Uttar Pradesh ’s EBC remain deprived of their rightful social, educational, economic and political empowerment.

Talking to reporters here, he said the community, despite constituting nearly 35% of the state’s population, lacks proportionate representation from panchayats to Parliament. Invoking the ideals of Jan Nayak Karpoori Thakur, the Congress demanded a state EBC commission, population-based reservation in panchayat and municipal elections, an EBC atrocities prevention law, an EBC finance and development corporation, and a 15% quota in state government services. City Congress president Raghvendra Chaubey sought respectable representation for EBCs in the 2027 assembly elections.

OBC Congress leaders also urged wider candidature for EBC members in local body polls, reaffirming the party’s commitment to rights, dignity, education, employment and political participation across Uttar Pradesh’s public life.
