Moshi landfill collapse on July 8, 2026 claimed nine lives
Pune: Activists and political leaders in Pimpri Chinchwad have demanded that state govt make public all inquiry reports into the July 8 Moshi landfill collapse, which claimed nine lives, and disclose the action taken against those found responsible. The committee submitted its final report to state govt on Sept 22. The July 8 incident occurred when a massive mound of waste at the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s Moshi waste depot collapsed onto a three-storey administrative building of the waste-to-energy project.
Accountability must be fixed for the action actually taken based on these reports,” activist Maruti Bhapkar said, stressing the need for transparency and concrete action. They have questioned the delay in releasing the findings of the high-level inquiry committee and sought a time-bound plan to fix accountability and prevent a recurrence of such incidents. In a letter to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and deputy chief ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, activists and political leaders demanded that the govt publish the complete report of the committee headed by the Pune divisional commissioner, along with its findings, technical observations, recommendations and proposed preventive measures. The govt, however, has not officially disclosed its findings or the action taken on its recommendations. “Appointing committees or submitting reports in the name of an inquiry is not enough. Nine workers were killed and several others injured. The incident raised serious questions about waste management practices, structural safety, worker protection, environmental compliance and monitoring of the project.

A clear timeline for completing pending investigations and taking further action should be made available to citizens,” said Narendra Bansode, city president of the Congress Pimpri Chinchwad unit. Following the collapse, state govt appointed a high-level inquiry committee headed by the divisional commissioner. Investigations were also initiated by National Green Tribunal (NGT), Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and police. Apart from the divisional commissioner’s report, activists and opposition leaders have sought details of the police Special Investigation Team ’s (SIT) probe, including the offences registered, the status of the investigation and whether a chargesheet has been filed. They have also demanded that the govt disclose the findings of the NGT-appointed joint committee and the MPCB’s observations on possible environmental violations. “The govt must upload all inquiry reports, orders, recommendations and action-taken reports on its official website.
