Constable, son ‘assault’ Mayo Hospital doc, cop alleges medical negligence

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Nagpur: A police constable and doctors at Indira Gandhi Govt Medical College (IGGMC or Mayo Hospital) were allegedly involved in a confrontation at the hospital on Wednesday, with both sides filing police complaints against each other for assault and issuing threats.

As per police, constable Ranjit Jadhav, posted at Nagpur police headquarters, had taken his 20-year-old son Vedant to Mayo Hospital’s casualty department on Wednesday afternoon after the latter injured his finger while cleaning a motorcycle. An argument began when a resident doctor, Dr Sameer Chandekar (27), allegedly attended to another critical patient before examining Vedant.

Vedant too allegedly pushed and hit the doctor and scratched his hand, said police. Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), Govt Medical College, Nagpur, and Central MARD have condemned the incident and demanded effective preventive measures to ensure safety of resident doctors and healthcare professionals. This angered Jadhav, who allegedly confronted the doctor and assaulted him. As per the complaint lodged by Dr Chandekar at Tehsil police station, Jadhav also allegedly threatened him. Tehsil police registered an offence against Jadhav and his son for allegedly assaulting a doctor on duty, threatening him and obstructing govt work. The constable also alleged that Chandekar and seven to eight other doctors confined him and his son in a room behind the Mayo police outpost for nearly one-and-a-half hours. Tehsil police registered an offence against Chandekar and seven to eight unidentified doctors based on the constable’s complaint. No arrests have been made in either case. Police are investigating both complaints.
