Varanasi: Distressed over the critical condition of her newborn son, a 27-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide by hanging herself near the oxygen plant building on the campus of Sir Sunderlal Hospital (SSL), BHU, under the Lanka police station area on Thursday morning.
The woman was insisting on taking the newborn home on the night of Nov 4, according to her mother-in-law.
Lanka police station in charge Rajkumar Sharma said the deceased was a resident of the Anpara area of Sonbhadra district. Her mother-in-law told police that she was deeply distressed over the situation. Police said while her family members were asleep late Wednesday, she went to the area near the oxygen plant, close to the paediatrics department, and hanged herself.
Police completed preliminary legal formalities, sent the body for postmortem examination, examined CCTV footage and questioned her family members. However, doctors refused to discharge the infant in view of his critical condition. A security guard spotted her body on Thursday morning and alerted the police.
