Travis Kelce has given the Kansas City Chiefs a welcome injury boost ahead of their Week 9 game. The veteran tight end, who has been managing an ankle problem since the Week 7 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, returned to full participation in Thursday’s practice, November 5. The Chiefs had reason to keep a close eye on Travis Kelce after his ankle injury against the Chargers in Week 7. On Wednesday, November 4, the tight end was once again listed as a limited participant. Unless Kelce suffers a setback or is downgraded significantly on Friday, he appears well positioned to play in Week 9. At 37, he remains one of Mahomes’ most reliable targets during the 2026 season, even as the Chiefs continue to manage his ankle problem. Kelce has recorded at least 50 receiving yards in five of Kansas City’s seven games. He has also reached the 40-yard mark in six of those seven outings.

Kelce was a full participant, suggesting that he had made progress since the previous day, according to the Chiefs’ injury report. That is a significant change from Wednesday’s injury report, when Kelce was still limited. His latest update offers hope that Patrick Mahomes will have his most dependable receiving option available this weekend, although Friday’s practice report will provide another indication of his status. He continued to play despite the issue, but his practice schedule suggested that the problem had not completely gone away. He has also had to manage his workload during recent practices, making his latest participation particularly encouraging for Kansas City. That raised some concern about whether the ankle was beginning to affect his availability, especially with another game approaching. Thursday brought a much better update. The change gives Kansas City a more positive outlook heading into the weekend. For Mahomes, having Kelce available is particularly important. The two have built a strong connection over several seasons, and the quarterback continues to rely on the tight end when the passing game needs a dependable option. Travis Kelce’s importance to the offense is becoming harder to overlook. His receiving numbers underline that value.

Kelce was limited on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday during the following week. Rashee Rice and Niko Remigio also moved up to full participation after being limited on Wednesday.

The Chiefs need him on the field, yet they also need other receivers to step up if they want to make a serious push for another Super Bowl in 2026. Those numbers make him a central part of the passing attack. They also highlight a potential concern for the Chiefs. If a tight end dealing with a lingering injury is leading the way among the team’s receiving options, Kansas City may need more production from its wide receivers. A move could give Mahomes another dependable target and reduce the pressure on Kelce to carry such a large share of the passing game. Kansas City still has time to address that need. Kelce’s Thursday update is encouraging, but one healthy practice does not erase the larger question surrounding the offense. Get the latest Sports News and Live updates. Download the TOI app.
