“We have increased daily supply by 20 MLD, from around 590 MLD to 610 MLD to ensure adequate water supply during the festive season. This is a temporary measure as demand is expected to return to the normal level of around 590 MLD after Bhaubeej on Nov 11,” Dharankar said. The civic body expects the additional population could raise the city’s water consumption by around 10%. Gangapur dam supplies nearly 80% of Nashik’s water requirement, while the remaining 20% comes from Mukane and Darna dams.

He said NMC had also sought exemption from the state’s mandatory 10% water cut imposed due to drought conditions. NMC superintending engineer (water supply and sewage management) Ravindra Dharankar told TOI that demand had surged during the festival season. “If the revised water quota sought by NMC is not approved, we may have to introduce a water cut after Diwali,” Dharankar said. Officials said the revised estimate also factors in the possible migration of workers from drought-hit rural areas of Nashik and neighbouring districts.

Earlier, NMC had sought a reservation of 8,000 mcft for the current water reservation period. At a district water distribution committee meeting on Oct 29, guardian minister Girish Mahajan approved a quota of 6,900 mcft and directed NMC to implement a 10% water cut to ensure the allocation lasts till Aug 2027. Subsequently, NMC submitted a revised proposal seeking 8,280 mcft for the 2026-27 water reservation year, citing additional demand during Kumbh Mela , including requirements of pilgrims and seers staying at Sadhugram.

Nashik : The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has increased the city’s daily water supply by 20 MLD, from around 590 MLD to 610 MLD, to prevent shortages during the festive period. NMC, however, warned that a 10% water cut might be imposed after Diwali if the state water resources department did not approve its revised water reservation proposal of 8,280 million cubic feet (mcft). The additional supply will continue for about a week.
