Ahmedabad : Four days after a drunk-driving crash in Nikol killed two women and a boy, another such case was reported from Vastrapur, where an Axis Bank manager allegedly rammed an Activa scooter and dragged it for nearly 1km before local residents stopped him.
The incident comes close on the heels of the Nov 2 Nikol crash, in which a car allegedly driven by an intoxicated man mounted a footpath and hit a woman selling sofa covers and her 8-year-old son. Police later confirmed that the driver’s alcohol test had returned positive. The car, allegedly driven by Mihir Niranjan Sharma, struck an Activa rider, throwing him off the two-wheeler, according to police. Inspector A B Mori of A-Division traffic police said that the victim did not file any complaint of hitting his vehicle in a drunk state. The vehicle which he was driving did not show any phone number in the registration details, said Mori.
The accident took place near Gurukul Crossroads. The scooter became lodged in the front portion of the vehicle. Instead of stopping, Sharma allegedly continued driving towards Doordarshan Crossroads, dragging the scooter along the road. Residents who noticed the car dragging the scooter chased it and intercepted the vehicle. When they pulled Sharma out, they allegedly found him under the influence of alcohol and handed him over to the police. Vastrapur police recovered a half-filled liquor bottle from the car. A case has been registered against Sharma for drunk driving and possession of liquor, and he has been arrested. When a team of traffic police reached the victim’s home in Gurukul, it was found locked.
