Nagpur: Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has added 12 road sweeping machines and four chain crawler excavators to its sanitation fleet, aiming to improve mechanised cleaning of major roads, the city’s rivers and drains. Mayor Neeta Thakre inaugurated the new machinery at the civic body’s central workshop on Friday.

With the addition of 12 machines, NMC’s road sweeping fleet has doubled. Deputy commissioner Rajesh Bhagat told TOI that one machine would be allotted to the 10 zonal offices to improve road cleaning across the city. The 12 newly procured road sweepers have been purchased under the Centre and state govt’s Swachh Maharashtra Mission 2.0 at a cost of Rs5.58 crore. Each machine costs Rs46.50 lakh and has a collection capacity of three cubic metres. NMC has also procured four chain crawler excavators, commonly known as Poclain machines, at a cost of Rs1.51 crore under the Nagpur District Planning Committee’s 2025-26 annual plan. Each machine has a capacity of five tonnes and a bucket capacity of 0.22 cubic metres.

The remaining two machines will be operated by a central team, which will primarily take up sweeping of flyovers and other major roads. Manufactured by Baxy Ltd on a Tata Motors chassis, the machines are designed to remove dust, soil and garbage from roads through mechanical sweeping. These excavators will be used to remove accumulated silt and garbage from narrow stretches of rivers and drains and beneath bridges, where conventional machinery faces operational constraints. Thakre stressed the need for effective use of modern technology in sanitation operations and directed the administration to ensure proper training for personnel handling the new equipment. The machines are expected to strengthen the civic body’s mechanised cleaning operations and improve the efficiency of its sanitation system. Download the TOI App.
