The MSRDC official said, “We cannot close all the lanes at this point, particularly with the Diwali traffic rush. Motorists said MSRDC should inspect the entire expressway corridor, including pavement joints, shoulders, drainage systems and stretches vulnerable to water accumulation and surface damage. They said the corporation should publish a time-bound maintenance plan and ensure that defects were identified before they became safety hazards. They said the benefits of Connecting Link would be undermined if the existing approach roads were not maintained to the same safety standards. Responding to the concerns, an MSRDC official said inspections and maintenance of the entire expressway were carried out regularly as per prescribed norms.

Motorists shared videos of the damaged surface on social media, questioning the quality of maintenance and the risks posed to vehicles travelling at high speed. Commuters questioned why the approach road to a new infrastructure link was allowed to deteriorate and called for a thorough maintenance audit of the entire 94km expressway. A motorist flagged the problem in an online account of the journey. With the Diwali holiday rush expected to increase traffic on the Mumbai-Pune corridor, commuters have also stressed the need for proper barricading, warning signs and traffic management while repairs are underway. Pune: MSRDC has started repairing a 100-metre stretch just before the entry to Connecting Link of Pune-Mumbai expressway with epoxy asphalt after motorists flagged its deteriorating condition and expressed concerns over road safety ahead of Diwali rush. The 100-metre stretch on an old bridge could not be repaired during monsoon.

An official of Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) told TOI , “The resurfacing work has begun with epoxy asphalt. Epoxy asphalt is a specialised road surfacing material made by combining bitumen with epoxy resin. It forms a stronger surface than conventional asphalt and offers greater resistance to water damage and wear from heavy traffic. The Pune-Mumbai expressway has a six-lane cement-concrete pavement with paved shoulders. Indian Roads Congress (IRC), in its guidelines for maintenance and rehabilitation of cement-concrete pavements, recommends at least two condition surveys annually — one before and another after monsoon.
