As per the proposal, fodder camps should be set up especially in areas with a high concentration of stray cattle

Another proposal for setting up gaushalas (cow shelters) in 32 villages merged into PMC limits has been approved by both the standing committee and general body of PMC. However, constructing and operationalising these gaushalas is likely to take some time and therefore a stopgap arrangement for setting up fodder camps should be made, the members said. Since restrictions on water usage by citizens are expected to be enforced, this could adversely affect availability of drinking water for stray cattle in the city,” said Suhas Tingre, PMC corporator. “The proposal is being finalised,” said Shrinath Bhimale, the standing committee chairperson. This will help in making arrangements for food, shelter, medical treatment and rearing of cows and other cattle, officials said.

“Given the drought-like situation prevailing across Maharashtra and impending possibility of a water crisis in the city, an alternate-day water supply is being planned. As per the proposal, fodder camps should be set up especially in areas with a high concentration of stray cattle. Further, arrangements such as clean drinking water pots or water tanks should be provided at various intersections, open spaces, places frequented by animals and other public locations as required, ensuring a regular supply of drinking water for the animals. PMC would seek cooperation from local gaushala organisations, cow protection groups, gau-rakshaks and volunteer animal welfare organisations for better success of this initiative. Taking into consideration the cattle population, proper planning should be undertaken for fodder supply, drinking water availability, regular cleanliness, necessary medical care and maintenance, the proposal stated. The concerned departments should take immediate action to identify required locations, arrange water tanks and pots, provide fodder supplies and make necessary manpower and financial provisions, the proposal added.
