Kolkata: CM Suvendu Adhikari has implemented 43% of BJP ’s pre-poll promises, said Bengal minister for urban development and municipal affairs Agnimitra Paul on Wednesday. She was speaking on the sidelines of Credai Kolkata-organised ‘Techcon 2026’. “How can a councillor provide the same quality of services in a ward with a population of 10,000-12,000 that one is providing in a ward with 5,000 people?
Because councillors of all wards get the same amount of money irrespective of population.
Addressing criticism from opposition parties that the Bengal govt’s ward delimitation exercise in Kolkata and Howrah was politically motivated, Paul said, “The previous govt did not provide civic services. Only smaller wards can ensure proper civic services,” she said. We will provide them. It is to ensure provision of civic services that our govt has decided on delimitation of wards. It’s not possible.
The number of wards under Kolkata Municipal Corporation is set to rise from 144 to 209, according to the govt’s plans. The number of wards under Howrah Municipal Corporation is set to go up from 50 to 68. The municipal affairs minister further said the state govt was planning to hold civic polls over the months of Nov and Dec. Urging the real estate industry to invest more in Bengal, Paul said, “We want sustainable development, absolute transparency and consumer trust. We are fully dedicated to enhancing the ease of doing business in Bengal. We want to remove procedural bottlenecks, streamline digital clearances, and collaborate with you to create a robust infrastructure. Download the TOI App.
