Kochi : For Orthodox priest Fr O J Jacob of Chottanikkara, 88-year-old Parvathi, fondly known as Payamma, was more than a worker who had served his family for 25 years. Parvathi, a native of Irumpanam, joined the household in 2000 to care for Jacob’s six-year-old daughter, Merin, following the death of his wife. With no close relatives of her own, Parvathi soon became an integral part of the household. Jacob, then a professor at St Peter’s College, Kolenchery, and Merin treated her as a senior member of the family. She took care of the day-to-day affairs of the home. “She was like a family member to us. After Merin got married nine years ago, Jacob and Parvathi were the only ones left in the house. Though she suffered from age-related ailments, Parvathi remained active in household matters until about a week ago.

When she died on Sunday, he arranged for her to be given Hindu funeral rites. The rites were held at Jacob’s residence in Chottanikkara on Monday. She passed away on Sunday evening, and we conducted the ceremonies as per Hindu customs on Monday, respecting her faith,” Jacob said.
