Thrissur : Congress nominee Rose Mary Abesh was elected president of Paralam panchayat in Thrissur on Thursday with the support of two CPI members who defied their party whip.
The 17-member council has six each from UDF and BJP .
The two, C M Shakeer and Vanaja Rajan, said they backed Congress nominee to prevent the “communal BJP” from coming to power. The LDF has five: three from the CPI and two from CPM. Two of the three CPI members voted for Abesh. They were prepared to legally challenge any disciplinary action, they added.

Shakeer said the party’s local committee had decided to support Congress nominee and that the two had chosen to abide by that decision. CPI district leadership subsequently suspended both for defying the whip. The third CPI member, Sudha, followed the district committee’s directive. BJP’s Anitha Prasannan, the previous president, had been ousted through a no-confidence motion backed jointly by the UDF and the LDF. Download the TOI App.
