Hyderabad: A consumer body has directed a Secunderabad-based logistics firm to pay Rs 63.9 lakh after a high-value Sat-Com (satellite communication) system belonging to National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO) was damaged when the antenna mounted on the consignment struck the platform of Delhi’s Arjungarh Metro station during transport.
The consignment was insured for Rs 8.4 crore. The order was passed on Aug 17 by a bench, comprising president B Uma Venkata Subba Lakshmi and members C Lakshmi Prasanna and B Raji Reddy. Antenna crushed under Metro platform NTRO, Base Unit-1 at Shamirpet, had entrusted an MCT-SUV PP2 (Sat-Com System) to KP Logistics for road transport from Hyderabad to New Delhi on June 28, 2023. On July 4, 2023, while the lorry was passing beneath Arjungarh Metro station, the antenna fitted on top had collided with the Metro platform and got crushed. The carrier issued a damage certificate on July 7, 2023. The damaged consignment was eventually delivered on Jan 22, 2025. An independent surveyor, in a report on Dec 18, 2024, assessed the loss at Rs 63.9 lakh. On April 9, 2025, NTRO executed a letter of subrogation and special power of attorney authorising the insurer to recover the loss from the carrier. Transporter failed to appear After a notice to the transporter on Sept 25, 2025, failed to result in payment, the complaint was filed on Oct 21. A notice was then published in newspapers on Jan 27, 2026. As the transporter still did not appear, its right to file a written version was forfeited on Feb 27. Allowing the complaint, the commission directed KP Logistics to pay Rs 63,94,652 with 6% annual interest from the date of the order and Rs 20,000 as costs, within 45 days. If it fails to comply, the award amount would carry 9% annual interest from Aug 17 until realisation.

Summons and personal notices were returned with endorsements stating “no such addressee” and “no such person”. District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission-I, Hyderabad, held KP Logistics negligent in handling the consignment and ordered it to reimburse Oriental Insurance Co Ltd, which had settled NTRO’s insurance claim. The complainants attributed the damage to the carrier’s failure to maintain adequate height clearance. Oriental Insurance paid that amount to NTRO. KP Logistics did not file a defence.
