NEW DELHI: Former South Africa Test captain Dean Elgar has announced that he will retire from all professional cricket at the end of the 2026 County Championship season, bringing the curtain down on a career spanning more than two decades. The 39-year-old left-handed opener confirmed his decision through Essex, where he has continued to make a significant impact in county cricket after calling time on his international career in January 2024. I’m not getting any younger, 39 years old, and I’ve got a lot of things going on back home with regards to a young but growing-up-very-quickly family. He played 86 Tests, scoring 5,347 runs at an average of 37.92, with 14 centuries and a highest score of 199. He scored more than 1,000 runs in his first season with the county and was named Essex’s Batter of the Year.
Elgar said the decision was largely driven by a desire to spend more time with his family in South Africa. It’s the right time for me now to be present at home and be there for my partner and my kids,” Elgar said, as quoted by Essex Cricket. That stands out quite profoundly, purely the way we played cricket and the style and brand in which we played it,” Elgar said. “When I joined Essex, I felt the pressure of having to replace Sir Alastair, but I knew that I needed to bring my own style of cricket,” Elgar said.
“I feel it’s the right time for me now. Elgar leaves the game as one of South Africa’s most dependable Test openers. “Beating England at Lord’s as captain is one of them. Joining Essex came with its own challenge.
Elgar inherited the opening role previously occupied by England great Alastair Cook, but he quickly established himself in his own way.
Elgar to Play Final Matches for Essex
South African cricketer Dean Elgar will be available for Essex’s last five County Championship matches of the season. His participation begins with a home fixture against Surrey at Chelmsford.
