Fr. Thomas Animoottil appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Archeparchy of Kottayam
He was appointed following his election by synod of bishops of the Syro-Malabar Church during the second session of the 34th synod, which began at Mount St Thomas, Kakkanad, on Aug 17. The appointment was officially announced simultaneously at 12 noon in the Vatican and at 3.30pm at Mount St Thomas, Kakkanad. Fr Animoottil was born on Jan 13, 1962, in the family of the late Joseph and Eli, belonging to St Anne’s Parish, Payyavoor, in archeparchy of Kottayam. He pursued his philosophical and theological formation at St Joseph’s Seminary, Mangaluru, and was ordained a priest by Mar Kuriakose Kunnacherry on April 13, 1989.
The date of the episcopal ordination of the Bishop-elect will be announced later, said an official statement. Mar Thattil made the announcement during a general assembly held at major archiepiscopal curia of the Syro-Malabar Church. Fr Abraham Kavilpurayidathil, major archiepiscopal chancellor, read the decree of appointment issued by major archbishop. Major archbishop together with Mar Mathew Moolakkatt, metropolitan archbishop of Kottayam, then presented the episcopal insignia to the bishop-elect. After completing his schooling, he entered the minor seminary of archeparchy of Kottayam. Following his priestly ordination, he served as the vicar of Pulinjal parish before proceeding to Rome for higher studies. He obtained a Licentiate in Canon Law from Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, Rome, and subsequently pursued advanced studies in clinical pastoral education in Los Angeles, United States. He later served as the vicar of Uzhavoor and Kaduthuruthy parishes. He is currently serving as Pro-Protosyncellus of archeparchy of Kottayam. The synod also selected Santhosh Karumathra of Archeparchy of Trichur and Jacob Pynadath of Archeparchy of Ernakulam-Angamaly for the title of Sabhatharam, an award to honour lay faithful who have rendered distinguished service to the Church and society.
