Samsung has unveiled its most expensive foldable smartphone — Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra at the company’s Galaxy Unpacked event in London. With the launch of Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, the South Korean giant brings Galaxy’s renowned Ultra standard to foldables with maximum productivity and content creation in a larger workspace. The smartphone packs a 200MP triple rear camera setup and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset. We got the chance to spend some time with the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and here’s our first impressions of the new Samsung smartphone.
The foldable smartphone also comes with the AI-native FlexWindow keeps relevant information and shortcuts within reach.
The inner 8-inch panel is where the Z Fold 8 Ultra genuinely impresses. The inner screen reaches 3,000 nits of peak brightness, a meaningful step up from the previous generation, and in the lit environment of the launch event it handled ambient glare without any difficulty. The 200MP primary sensor is carried over from the Z Fold 7, where it delivered strong results, and the meaningful upgrade this year is the 50MP ultrawide — a significant jump from the 12MP ultrawide on the Z Fold 7 that was widely criticised as the camera system’s weakest component.
In the brief shooting we did at the launch event, the ultrawide shots showed a level of detail and sharpness that the previous generation could not match, and the consistency between primary and ultrawide output has improved visibly as a result. Colours are vivid and accurate, and content fills the screen with an immersive quality that no conventional smartphone can replicate. The reduced crease visibility makes the inner display easier to lose yourself in during extended use.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra design
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra features an 8.0‑inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display with 2504 × 2256 pixel resolution. On the other hand, the 6.5-inch FHD+ cover screen comes with 1080×2520 pixel resolution and it offers 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. The 6.5-inch size hits a practical sweet spot that feels closer to a conventional smartphone than the narrow candy-bar covers that made early foldables awkward for quick tasks.
The smartphone also comes with IP48 rating which makes it dust and water resistant. The buttons are also well placed, the volume rocker and power button are located on the right side while the USB Type Charging port sits at the bottom. The rear of the smartphone houses a vertically aligned triple rear camera setup. Overall build quality communicates flagship intent throughout. This is unambiguously a premium object. The main screen of the foldable smartphone offers 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and Vision Booster for enhanced outdoor visibility. The cover display is noticeably more usable than early Fold generations, wide enough for comfortable one-handed typing and navigation without unfolding.
