Madurai: Madras high court on Friday permitted the conduct of the Dhuvajharohanam/ Kodiyettram (flag hoisting ceremony) of Avani Mahotsavam of the Tiruchendur Subramaniya Swamy temple as per the timing mentioned in the invitation between 5.15am and 5.40am on August 31. The petitioner stated that the auspicious time for flag hoisting was fixed between 9am and 9.22am on August 31, in accordance with the panchangam, established procedure and religious custom followed by the temple. However, the timing was altered and fixed as 5.15am to 5.40am. The temple authorities should never ever override the views of the Vidhayagar in future,” the judges observed and posted the matter for further hearing to September 10.
The court was hearing a public interest litigation filed by S Muthukrishnan Ayyar, secretary of Sri Subramaniya Swamy Thirukoil Swathanthira Parabalana Sthalathar Sabha. A division bench of Justice C V Karthikeyan and Justice R Sakthivel observed that let the function proceed in the manner in which the timings are indicated in the invitation. “We make it clear that this permission for flag hoisting to be performed at a time which has not been suggested by the Vidhayagar, is only for this particular occasion, taking into consideration the fact that an order had to be passed today being Friday and the function to start on Monday.
