Madurai: V O Chidambaranar Port Authority is expanding cargo-handling, storage and evacuation infrastructure as annual cargo traffic is projected to reach 53.25 million tonnes by 2029-30. The port has already handled 14.73 million tonnes of cargo up to July, including 2.95 lakh TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) of container traffic and 8.84 million tonnes of major bulk cargo.

Berth seven is being upgraded into a container terminal for Rs 517.19 crore, with an annual capacity of 4.2 lakh TEUs. The 370-metre berth width will be increased from 11.7 metres to 14.20 metres, enabling it to handle vessels capable of holding up to 12,100 TEUs. Development of multi cargo berth 10, costing Rs 87.38 crore, is expected to be complete by Nov-end. An additional 40-acre custom bond area is being developed to increase bulk cargo stacking capacity.
