Onion loading was under way in Manmad on Friday
Nashik : Centre is set to send 840-tonne onion consignment from its buffer stock to Chennai on Saturday, after dispatching 500 tonnes onions to Delhi through the Kanda Express on Wednesday, an initiative aimed at cooling rising retail prices. Centre has procured around 1.21 lakh tonnes of onions for its buffer stock through two central agencies — Nafed and NCCF — to stabilise supplies and check price spikes. Onions released under the Kanda Express initiative are being sold at a subsidised rate of Rs 35 per kg through Nafed, NCCF and Kendriya Bhandar outlets.
Officials said the combined rail and road strategy is intended to speed up supplies to markets witnessing higher prices. In addition to rail transport, Centre has stepped up road-based distribution of buffer stock onions. Over the past few days, two truckloads each have been sent to Delhi and Guwahati, with more consignments planned for other cities. The consumer affairs ministry has indicated that future rail consignments may be sent to Ernakulam, Madurai and Guwahati, in addition to Delhi and Chennai, to improve availability and curb further retail price increases.
At Lasalgaon APMC, the country’s largest onion market, average prices have dropped 10% over the last four days, falling by Rs 450 per quintal from Rs 4,250 on Monday to Rs 3,800. Meanwhile, Centre’s market intervention has begun impacting wholesale prices in Nashik. Traders attribute the decline to the release of onions from the Centre’s buffer stock into key consumption markets.
