An officer from Phursungi police said, “The complainant hails from Nagpur. She had registered at a maternity hospital in Nagpur and was scheduled to travel there for her delivery. Her mother, who was accompanying her, searched the internet for the hospital’s contact number to book an appointment. After finding a number, she called it and a woman who answered sent her a link to book the appointment. “The woman realised she had been duped and asked the bank to stop further online transactions. She approached the police on Thursday and lodged a complaint,” the officer added.
“She told the complainant’s mother to fill in the patient’s details and pay a nominal charge of Rs 5. After filling in the details, she was directed to a payment option and paid Rs 5,” the officer said. However, on Aug 24, she received messages stating Rs85,000 and another Rs5,000 had been debited, without her authorisation.
The mother shared the link with an APK file named ‘hospital appointment book csc.apk’ with the complainant. When the techie clicked on the link, the app was downloaded onto her cellphone. The bank contacted her to confirm the transactions.
Pune: A 28-year-old software engineer from Bhekrainagar in Phursungi who is expecting lost Rs90,000 after downloading an APK file. The app was purportedly meant for booking a hospital appointment.
