Gandhinagar : On the eve of National Sports Day , which is being observed on Saturday, Aug 29, the state govt said that from identifying sporting talent in remote villages through the Khel Mahakumbh to creating world-class sporting infrastructure, Gujarat is seeking to emerge as a major sporting hub in the country.

A govt statement said that Gujarat, which was primarily known for trade and industry, is now positioning sport as a tool for youth empowerment and talent development. The statement said that state-of-the-art sports complexes and stadiums have been developed at the district level, offering facilities for various disciplines. The Veer Savarkar Sports Complex at Naranpura and the proposed Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave will further position Gujarat as a globally recognised sporting ecosystem, it said.
The statement added that attempts are being made to strengthen the support system for elite athletes through the Shaktidoot Yojana. Under the scheme, selected sportspersons receive financial assistance for training, nutrition, sporting kits and participation in national and international competitions.
