Madurai: Madras high court on Friday directed state govt to issue a GO to release water from Amaravathi dam for drinking water for Karur district and irrigation purposes in the old Amaravathi ayacut starting from August 30. He stated that a GO dated July 20 has been issued to release water in new Amaravathi ayacut for irrigation purposes. The judges observed that the water level in Amaravathi dam is 60.5 feet. Further, according to the proposal, water would be released for 10 days for the purpose of drinking water. Simultaneously, 300 cusecs of water would be released every day exclusively for irrigation in Raja Vaikal in old ayacut region for the benefit of farmers whose standing crops of sugarcane, paddy, coconut trees, etc. , now require water supply; otherwise, the crops/trees would wither away. The judges directed govt to issue the necessary GO and do the requisite preparatory works to ensure that water is supplied from August 30.
If the water is released for irrigation purposes, then there may be a possibility of scarcity of drinking water in Karur district. An impleading petition was also filed by Karathozhuvu Palaya Vaikkal Neerinai Payanpaduthuvoor Sangam in which they sought relief that while providing drinking water, it should also be released to the Raja Vaikkal and eight other ayacuts, wherein there are growing crops now withering owing to lack of water. This would enable water to be released. The court was hearing a public interest litigation filed by P Meignanamoorthi of Karur district. Hence, the petitioner moved court. The state submitted that chief executive engineer, water resources department, Coimbatore division, had forwarded a proposal to the engineer-in-chief, water resources department, Chennai. A GO has to be passed after examining the proposal. A division bench of Justice C V Karthikeyan and Justice R Sakthivel observed that they are of the opinion that it is extremely reasonable and it is imperative that a GO is issued immediately in accordance with the proposal forwarded by the chief executive engineer, water resources department, Coimbatore division.
