Durgapur : A political controversy erupted in Durgapur’s A Zone Harshavardhan area in West Burdwan district after a statue of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was allegedly uprooted and dumped in a nearby jungle.
The party issued a 24-hour ultimatum, demanding that the statue be restored and reinstalled at its original location. Police officials confirmed receiving the mass petition and said an investigation into the incident has been initiated. Congress workers warned of larger protests across the district if their demands were not met.
A delegation of Congress workers submitted a mass petition at Durgapur police station on Sunday, urging the authorities to act swiftly.
The incident, which took place a day before Raksha Bandhan , sparked resentment among local Congress supporters. After learning about the alleged desecration, Congress workers reached the spot and staged a demonstration, demanding action against those responsible.
