The Gujarat state government has renewed its ban on gutka and pan masala, citing significant health concerns. Research from Tata Memorial Hospital, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, and HAMER indicates that these products are carcinogenic and substantially raise the risk of oral cancer. This decision aligns with data from the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS), which reveals that 35% of adults in India use tobacco, with 21% opting for smokeless products.
The extension of the ban, first imposed in 2012, aims to safeguard public health and responds to requests from various non-governmental organizations advocating for stricter regulations on tobacco consumption.
