On Monday, the forest department successfully rescued an adult female leopard from a cage in Ramsahay Purwa village, located within the Kakraha Range of the Katarniaghat Wildlife Division. The operation highlights ongoing efforts to manage wildlife and ensure the safety of both animals and local communities.
Officials said the animal was captured around 5.30 am and did not suffer any injuries. The department said a leopard had killed a calf on Aug 20, and forest staff found fresh pugmarks during early-morning patrols in the area. After receiving complaints from villagers both verbally and in writing, officials sought required permissions and placed a cage at a strategically selected spot on Aug 26 to reduce the risk of human-wildlife conflict. The trapped animal was identified as a 9–10-year-old female leopard.

Officials said the leopard was healthy, active and free from injuries, and was declared fit for transportation and eventual release. The department said release plans would follow National Tiger Conservation Authority Standard Operating Procedures and departmental guidelines. The operation followed repeated reports of leopard movement in and around the village, which had heightened fear among residents. It was shifted to a designated safe house, where a veterinary doctor conducted a health examination.
