Apple may launch iPhone Air 2 next year with these three upgrades: The wider industry impact

Apple is preparing a second-generation iPhone Air for spring 2027, and it’s lining up three upgrades that take aim at the original’s biggest weak spots. Helping the cause is upgrade three: a new A20 Pro chip on Apple’s 2nm process, the same silicon headed for this year’s iPhone 18 Pro. The design itself stays put, so the Air 2 will look much like today’s model. The timing tracks with Apple’s reshuffled release calendar—the Air 2 is set to arrive alongside the standard iPhone 18 next spring, after the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and the long-rumored foldable debut in September 2026.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports the device—code-named V62 internally—has reached advanced testing, led by the addition of a second rear camera that buyers kept asking for. That second camera is upgrade one. The next two sit under the hood. Battery life—the Air’s other weak spot—is in Apple’s sights, though Bloomberg notes it’s unclear whether the gains come from a bigger cell or smarter efficiency. There may simply be no room to grow the battery inside that thin frame. Leaner transistors can stretch runtime without adding heft.
