Lucknow: A fugitive mining mafia carrying Rs 50,000 reward and accused of running over two policemen and grievously injuring them was arrested following a late-night encounter in Kushinagar on Monday.

Yadav escaped while being taken to a community health centre after complaining of severe stomach pain, according to police. Members of a gang involved in facilitating the movement of sand-laden trucks reached the spot in an SUV, according to investigators. He allegedly snatched the service pistol of sub-inspector Ravikant Singh and fled. Police later cornered him near the Jharwa underpass, where he allegedly opened fire on the police team. The police retaliated, injuring him in the leg before taking him into custody. Acting on their instructions, Ashu Kumar Yadav allegedly reversed the vehicle towards the policemen in an attempt to crush them. Constable Tiwari suffered grievous injuries and later underwent amputation of a leg. An FIR was registered against four named accused and several unidentified persons. Download the TOI App.
